Michael Maguire confirmed on Friday that he has axed star winger Selwyn Cobbo in favour of Josiah Karapani, who will play his first NRL game of the year. “As a group, and as a leadership group and as a coach, we’re pushing standards here and expectations in how we’re doing things, and Karapani’s got his opportunity and Selly’s got to look at a few things in his game,” Maguire said. The Broncos coach credit Karapani for his “consistent” work in the preseason but added that Cobbo can “definitely” earn a recall. Cobbo is off-contract in 2025 and his axing makes his future at Red Hill beyond this season uncertain at best. Cobbo has attracted interest from rival clubs and could be on his way out of the Broncos, who have to re-sign a number of stars, including Payne Haas, who is testing his value on the open market for 2027. It’s a stunning fall from grace for Cobbo, who was touted to potentially pick up a $1 million per season offer from a rival club to play fullback. Now, he is fighting to earn his way back into the NRL.
Meanwhile, David Fifita refuses to return to rugby league, despite being cleared by the Titans medical staff to resume playing, according to CODE Sport. Fifita is at odds with the Titans’ high-performance team over his planned return to the NRL. It comes six weeks after he was dropped by Des Hasler, sparking uncertainty over his long-term future at the club. Titans physios reportedly gave Fifita, who last month underwent minor ankle surgery, a medical clearance to return to the field. Titans medicos last week assessed Fifita’s ankle and told him he had a clean bill of health to play. But Fifita disagreed with the club’s medical advice, telling Titans doctors he needed more time to get his ankle right before he plays again. Fifita said after his axing, “the truth will one day come out”. Fifita is contracted to the end of next season, but was reportedly shopped to rivals recently.
