‘Oh boy’: Knights overcome ‘a fair bit’ adversity, including dubious call in epic thriller

Knights coach Adam O’Brien has praised the nerve of his side after they had a try at the death disallowed by what he thought was a questionable decision in a 26-20 win over the Dolphins.

With just over five minutes on the clock, the Knights started with the ball inside their own half before appearing to score one of the great team tries, however the last pass was called forward.

“He’s called that pass there forward. Oh boy, I don’t know about that. It didn’t look forward watching it live,” Fox League’s Warren Smith said.

“We could hear more about that post full time.”

“I’d say it was just about try of the year if it’s allowed,” Steve Roach added.

Despite the no try, Newcastle saved a controversial fallout as they would score the decisive four-pointer with a minute on the clock to record a gutsy win over a high-flying Dolphins team.

O’Brien didn’t agree with the call, but was happy his team found a way.

“I disagree with the decision but I’m really proud of the players,” he said.

“I didn’t think it was forward, I thought it was a very entertaining try but the boys rose above it.

“We had to contend with a fair bit tonight you know with (Dane) Gagai going to the bin, and they’re an in form footy team. They (Dolphins) have their stuff in order, clearly, with the amount of points they’ve scored.”

In addition to the Gagai sin bin and disallowed try, the Knights lost young gun Fletcher Sharpe to a concussion which led to a backline shuffle.

“You had Kai (Pearce-Paul) playing in the centres and we had to contend with that.”

The Knights move to 14 points with the win and as of Saturday night, are just one win outside of the eight.”
